DISCOVERY. THE SPIRIT OF THE HORSE
Friday, October 7, 2011 - Tuesday, January 10, 2012
The Jacksonville International Airport Arts Commission is proud to present Northeast Florida painters Ginny Elliott and Suzi Berg.
This exhibition takes a look at a magnificent creature, the horse. Both artists paint these animals with passion and genuine love. Berg approaches the animal with a fierce and dynamic style, showing movement and power through her use of color and bold strokes. Elliott shows the viewer a mythological, dream like animal ... an animal that has power within our own subconscious.

SUZI BERG
My paintings are a distillation of energetic connections with what I see.
The figures serve as vehicles to transport viewers to the connection of all living things, seen and unseen, past and present. My paintings are an invitation to connect with the palpable joy of Being and rekindle a shared respect for all life.

Ginny Elliott The name of the Story Will be Time, 20" x 20" oil on canvas
GINNY ELLIOTT
The recent work of Ginny Elliott combines her unconscious origins series and postcard series and adds to it the image of the horse.
Her paintings remain centered on the belief that a personal and loving God is guiding me through a lifelong process of transformation to mould me into the whole person. He created me to be.
States Ginny:
Eight years ago after the death of my 27 year old mare, I purchased a 7 year old gelding and began studying natural horsemanship. After learning from a handful of respected horsemen, I have become increasingly aware that the horse is a rich and vital source of self discovery.
Blind contours of my horse have been the source of my most recent postcards. I fill the page with lines, and when most of the drawing is finished I gaze awhile and contemplate the lines on the page. I then select and direct attention to any particular lines that suggest the true, whole form of my horse. Additionally I often accentuate lines or forms that illuminate any fleeting, inexpressible moments of awareness that traveled through my consciousness as I was drawing.
I have come to realize these drawings of my horse are reflections of my own self awareness and find that transferring them into my paintings is now one vital focus of my work. Indeed doing so is a transformation in and of itself.
One element from the study of natural horsemanship has provided a valuable addition to my painting process: that of having a mind like still water. By having a mind like still water with my horse, I set aside conscious thoughts of any particular behavior I want him to do; thereby, my mind becomes a quiet surface where I am able to see a reflection of his less obvious attributes. With my painting process, by having a mind like still water, I set aside preconceived ideas
I am reminded of Francesco Clemente's remark about the narrative of a painting: "Narratives have their own saying; you only have to listen."
If nothing else each painting grants me hope that as my Creator is watching and guiding the transformation of my life, He sees a pleasing one that is conforming to the whole image He has in mind for me.>
